Some mental tricks involving hypnosis or mind-reading may not be quite as easy or simple as regular old magic “gimmicks”, but with practice (and some rote memorization) you can astonish your friends and family with the apparent power of your mind. Here are some easy and jaw-dropping mentalism illusions that will have your audience in complete shock over your psychic abilities…

“I Can Predict Your Thoughts!” A truly baffling (at least to the audience!) trick that’s a true classic. It gives the volunteer the impression that you’re reading his or her mind, but actually the trick is based on a proven mathematical oddity. Here goes:

Step 1: Pick a volunteer.

Step 2: Ask the volunteer to pick a number from 2 through 9.

Step 3: Now tell the volunteer to multiply his chosen number by 9.

Step 4: Tell the volunteer to take the resulting two-digit number and add the digits together. For instance, if the two-digit number was 27, the resulting number from this step would be 2+7, or 9.

Step 5: Ask your volunteer to take this last number and subtract 5.

Step 6: Now ask him/her to think of the equivalent letter if A equals 1, B equals 2, C equals 3, D equals 4, E equals 5, etc.

Step 7: Ask your volunteer to think of a country beginning with that letter. Say out loud that, for example, B might make you think of Brazil, D Denmark, F France, and so on.

Step 8: Now ask your volunteer to think of the second letter in the country that he/she has just chosen. Think of an animal that begins with that letter.

Step 9: When the volunteer has a country and animal in mind, ask him/her to keep thinking about it while you try to concentrate on getting that mental image from him/her.

Step 10: Concentrate for a moment and look deep in thought. Then say, exactly according to this script: “Hmm, I didn’t know that there were elephants in Denmark.” Then watch your volunteer’s jaw drop.

Why does it work? Because mathematically the number your volunteer is left with is always going to be 4, which equates to D. You’ve already planted the suggestion in your script that D could stand for Denmark. The second letter of Denmark is E, which most people immediately associate with elephants. Voila — you can now read minds!
